No compromise

Quality of reed

The Dutch Federation of Thatchers has written a report regarding the quality of reed. It is a comprehensive report that also describes laboratory methods used to analyse reed quality. Nutrilab already has extensive experience in analysing reed.

Analysis of reed

Reed quality is determined by a number of factors.

  • Salt concentration is important and exhibits a gradient along the stalk.
  • The other factors regard the concentration of hemicellulose and lignin. Both substances exhibit a gradient along the stalk. Good quality reed has a high concentration of lignin and hemicellulose near the base of the stalk. Analyses of the three stalk segments will provide information regarding the correct cutting height of the reed.
  • The C/N ratio
  • Water intake and release also indicates a great deal about reed quality
  • The reed’s length/width ratio

Reed analysis packages

Nutrilab has various reed analysis packages. Package 1 only addresses salt concentration. Package 2 adds the hemicellulose and lignin concentration plus the C/N ratio to the salt concentration. Package 3 includes, in addition to the abovementioned analyses, also the reed’s water intake and release. Analysis Package 4 also includes the length/width ratio, analysis of dirt, photo-assisted visual assessment and a conclusion based on all of the above information. You can request an analysis form here.

Report

The values are presented in a standard report, including the expected values for good reed. Analysis package 4 includes photos along with a description of the delivered reed. Assessment and conclusions are based on the report, which has been written for the Federation of Thatchers.
